About Us

Battleground Tours is a friendly, independent company specialising in trips to the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. The company is owned and run by Nigel Dunkerley who has an interest in military history spanning nearly 25 years. This interest culminated in his obtaining an MA degree in British First World War Studies from the University of Birmingham in 2009. Nigel is an associate member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides and is a member of the Western Front Association.

At Battleground Tours we want you to have the tour experience that we would want for ourselves. You are the central part of any tour and our team will ensure that your journey with us is as smooth as possible. We cater for individuals and groups and our visits take typically no more than 30-35 people to ensure that you feel that you have had personal treatment. Please visit our testimonials page to read about how much our customers enjoy their tours with us.

Battleground Tours trips generally concentrate on one battle, rather than the whole of the war. The context of the battle will of course be explained in detail. This helps you to really understand what went on in a battle and get to the heart of the issues that soldiers and commanders found within it.

Our tours will give you the understanding of the difficulties faced by soldiers and commanders during these battles by placing you where they actually were. This can, of course, supplement your own reading around a battle, and recommended reading lists are provided for all our tours.

Our main tour areas for 2016 are the Somme, Ypres, Cambrai, Mons and Le Cateau from the First World War, and the Normandy campaign of the Second World War.

For the 100th anniversary year of the Battle of the Somme Battleground Tours is running two types of tour there. Our first, the Somme Pals Tour focusses on the 1st July 1916 and the attacks made by the Pals battalions. This tour concentrates specifically on the contribution of towns and cities from the North of the United Kingdom and also Ireland. The second tour, the Somme 1916 tour, tells the story of the battle from the 1st July right through to November and the wider context of involvement from Britain and the Dominions. Both will give an overview of the battle but the first is unashamedly about the Pals Battalions of Kitchener’s New Army.

As part of our scheduled trips we will make every effort to incorporate personal pilgrimages to places of special interest for you, such as the grave of a relative for example. We can also provide bespoke packages for individuals or groups who wish to undertake alternative trips – please contact us for details and a quote.

Battleground Tours will also undertake research for you about a relative who fought in the First World War. This is provided free to those who book on our tours but is also offered as a standalone service to those who do not wish to take a tour. For more details please click here.

Whatever your reason for taking a visit to the battlefields, Battleground Tours will provide a personal service that ensures you get the most out of it and feel that you have had good value for money.
